NC Pollen Is Rising, But What Are the Bees Carrying?

If you’ve been sneezing a little more lately, North Carolina’s late-summer landscape may have something to do with it. 🤧🌿
A recent WSOC-TV report shared that pollen levels around the Charlotte area are beginning to rise, with health officials encouraging people who experience seasonal allergies to prepare before conditions peak. One of the biggest names being mentioned right now?
Ragweed.
Ragweed releases large amounts of pollen during late summer and fall, and windy days can send those tiny grains floating through the air.
Of course, when we hear the word pollen, we can't help thinking about bees.
We've all seen that classic picture of a busy honey bee crawling around a flower with two chunky yellow bundles tucked onto her back legs.
So it got us wondering:
Is the pollen floating around North Carolina right now the same pollen our bees are carrying back to the hive?
The answer is a little more interesting than a simple yes or no.
🌬️ First, Meet the Pollen That Makes the Headlines
Not all plants move their pollen the same way.
Many plants responsible for seasonal allergies, including ragweed, grasses, and certain trees, rely heavily on the wind.
They don't need to convince a bee to stop by.
Instead, they release huge amounts of very light pollen into the air and let the breeze do the delivery work. That pollen can travel around neighborhoods, fields, roadsides, and sometimes much farther.
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology explains that wind-pollinated plants are responsible for many of the pollen grains associated with seasonal allergy symptoms. Late summer and fall are particularly associated with weed pollen.
And this is one of those things we suddenly notice everywhere once we learn about it.
The breeze that feels wonderful on a hot North Carolina afternoon?
Apparently, it may also be running a tiny pollen delivery service. 🌿
🐝 Now Meet the Pollen the Bees Carry
Honey bees have their own transportation system.
When a worker bee visits flowers, pollen grains stick to the hairs on her body. She gathers and packs some of that pollen into specialized areas on her hind legs called corbiculae, better known as pollen baskets.
NC State Extension describes these pollen baskets as smooth areas surrounded by hairs where the bee packs pollen into visible pellets.
Those are the little yellow, orange, tan, and sometimes surprisingly colorful bundles we see bees carrying home.
And honestly, those tiny pollen pants never stop being adorable. 🐝💛
Imagine doing your grocery shopping while carrying everything home strapped to your legs.
The bees somehow make it look easy.
🌼 So, What's the Big Difference?
The biggest difference is often how the pollen is meant to travel.
Airborne pollen 🌬️
Plants such as ragweed depend primarily on the wind.
Their pollen tends to be produced in very large quantities and is well suited to floating through the air.
That's useful for the plant.
Not always so lovely for noses. 🤧
Bee-carried pollen 🐝
Many colorful flowering plants depend more heavily on insects to help move pollen between flowers.
Instead of simply releasing enormous clouds into the breeze, these plants attract visitors such as bees.
Their pollen ends up on the bee's body, and some of it gets packed into those wonderful little pollen baskets for the trip back home.
It's such a beautifully simple partnership.
The flower provides food. The bee gets what the colony needs. And while visiting bloom after bloom, the bee can help move pollen between flowers.
Nature has been networking long before the rest of us figured it out. 🌼
👀 But Here’s the Twist: The Two Worlds Can Overlap
This is where it gets really interesting.
It would be easy to say:
“Allergy pollen comes from one group of plants, and bee pollen comes from a completely different group.”
But nature rarely fits into neat little boxes like that.
Honey bees can sometimes collect pollen from plants that are primarily wind-pollinated too.
Ragweed is one example.
Research and historical observations of honey bee foraging have documented bees collecting ragweed pollen, even though ragweed mainly relies on wind rather than bees for pollination.
So yes, a plant contributing to pollen in the air could also occasionally provide pollen that a bee gathers.
That's why the most accurate answer to our original question is:
Sometimes, but not necessarily.
The pollen floating through the air during allergy season and the pollen packed onto a bee's legs come from the same general world of flowering plants, but the mixture, plants involved, and way that pollen travels can be very different.
It’s a small distinction, but a fascinating one.
🟡 Why Does Bee Pollen Come in So Many Colors?
If you've ever looked closely at bee pollen granules, you may have noticed something wonderful.
They're not all yellow.
You might find shades of:
💛 Golden yellow
🧡 Orange
🤎 Brown
💚 Greenish tones
🤍 Cream
❤️ And occasionally deeper shades
That's because pollen can differ depending on the plant it came from.
As honey bees move through the landscape and visit different flowers, the pollen coming back to the hive can reflect what's blooming around them.
This is one of our favorite reminders that nature doesn't make everything identical.
A jar filled with differently colored granules almost looks like a tiny record of the bees' travels.
Where did they go?
What was blooming that week?
Which flower did they apparently love?
We may not have been flying beside them, but they bring home little clues.
🍯 Nectar and Pollen Have Different Jobs Too
Here's another thing we sometimes forget.
The bees aren't collecting pollen because they're trying to make honey out of it.
Nectar and pollen serve different purposes in the colony.
Honey bees collect nectar as an important carbohydrate source, and they transform nectar into honey.
Pollen provides protein, fats, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that are important to the colony, especially for developing young bees.
So when you see a bee coming home with full pollen baskets, you're basically watching her return from a grocery run for the family.
Nectar for energy. Pollen for nutrition. A very busy bee for delivery.
Suddenly our trip to the supermarket doesn't feel quite as impressive. 🐝
🌻 Pollen Changes With the Seasons
This might be the part we appreciate most.
What's available to honey bees changes throughout the year.
Different plants bloom at different times, which means the selection of pollen available to a colony changes too. USDA research has even explored how seasonal pollens vary and how those changes relate to honey bee nutrition throughout the colony's yearly cycle.
That means late summer isn't simply “another month” from a bee's perspective.
The flowers are changing.
The available forage is changing.
The weather is changing.
And the contents of those little pollen baskets can change along with them.
When you spend time around bees, you start noticing seasons in a completely different way.
Instead of just saying, “Fall is coming,” you find yourself wondering:
What's blooming right now?
And:
What are the girls bringing home today? 🐝🌼
One Important Note About Bee Pollen and Seasonal Allergies
Whenever pollen and allergies come up together, there's one distinction we think is especially important to share.
You may have heard claims that eating local honey or bee pollen can “cure” seasonal allergies.
The science doesn't support making that promise.
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health says there is no convincing scientific evidence that honey relieves seasonal allergies, and people with pollen allergies can potentially have allergic reactions to bee products, including bee pollen.
So while bee pollen is fascinating and we love learning about how bees gather it, it shouldn't be treated as an allergy medication.
Sometimes appreciating something from nature doesn't require giving it a miracle claim.
We think the real story of the bees is interesting enough on its own. 💛

The WSOC-TV report notes that Charlotte-area pollen levels are expected to continue rising as we move through this part of the season, particularly when conditions are windy.

For the bees?
It's another day at work.
They're still visiting flowers.
Still gathering pollen.
Still bringing nectar home.
Still moving through gardens, fields, roadsides, farms, and little patches of wildflowers that most of us probably drive past without even noticing.
And there’s something sweet about realizing that we're experiencing the same North Carolina season from two completely different perspectives.
We notice the pollen because it might make us sneeze.
The bees notice it because the landscape around them is their pantry.
💛 A Little Reflection From the Hive
Pollen season probably isn't anyone's favorite phrase when itchy eyes and sneezing are involved.
But learning a little more about pollen has made us appreciate just how much is happening outside that we rarely stop to see.
Some pollen catches the wind and travels invisibly through the air.
Some lands on the fuzzy body of a bee.
Some gets carefully packed into tiny baskets and carried home to a colony.
And every grain started with a plant quietly doing what plants have done season after season.
For a North Carolina beekeeping family, stories like this make us want to look a little closer at what's happening around the hive.
At the flowers.
At the weather.
At the changing colors of pollen coming home on tiny legs.
And at how closely bees, plants, seasons, and our own everyday lives are connected.
So if you spot a bee working a flower this week, take a second to watch her.
